Lulu

Our story

Our story begins in 2007, when Griet first set foot on Lamu Island. She instantly fell in love, not only with the island’s striking beauty, but also with a local fisherman, Babuu, while making a documentary about traditional fishing.

Out of a shared love for local culture and craftsmanship, Lulu Stories was born around 2014. We began collaborating with artisans to preserve age-old techniques and breathe new life into them through modern design.

Lulu, meaning “pearl” in Swahili, represents our intention to live slower, more meaningful lives, reconnecting with nature, with others and with ourselves. It is about nurturing what we truly need, while being kind to the world and the people around us.

Babuu has been by Griet’s side since the very beginning, while also running his own business offering sustainable deep-sea fishing trips.

Today we are growing a beautiful story, alongside us, our children are growing up barefoot, free in nature and in the embrace of a beautiful village and culture. What more could we possibly wish for. 🤍

Sending you all much love,

Griet & Babu
